Preparation to Repair Chipped Tile

Step 1. Before you can begin repairing a chip in tile you will first need to thoroughly clean the tile surface area. Use a mild soapy mixture of water and liquid dish soap. Use a sponge to clean the tile’s surface. Avoid using chemicals to clean the tile as it can prevent adhesives or paint that will be used later from adhering to the tile.
Step 2. After cleaning the tile, make sure to follow up with rinsing the tile surface area. Make sure that there is no soap residue left of the surface area where you will be repairing the chip.
Step 3. After the area has been rinsed, make sure it is dry before you continue on to the next step. Dry off the tile with a clean cloth. Next, use a hair dryer and heat up the damaged area for about 15 minutes.

Priming & Painting Bathroom or Other Tile

Step 1. To begin repairing the chip you will need a crafting oil-base primer and sealer, and a small or thin paintbrush (a Q-tip can be used as well). Use the paintbrush or Q-tip to apply the primer. Make sure the primer stays within the chipped area. The primer can cause the tile to become discolored.
Step 2. Allow the primer to dry for at least 2 hours. Make sure the primer is dry before applying the paint. With an oil-based paint the same or close to the same color of the tile, use a small amount of paint to cover the primer. Do not fill in the depth of the chip with paint.
Step 3. Give the paint plenty of time to dry. Once the paint is dry, inspect it and see how the color turned out. Add more paint if needed. You want the paint to cover the entire crack.

Epoxy Clear Tile Sealer

Step 1. Next you will want to use a clear waterproof “marine” epoxy. Each product varies in proper application, so read manufactures instructions and follow them. Epoxy may require premixing.
Step 2. Using a small pick or toothpick to apply the epoxy on top of the paint. You will want to fill in the entire depth of the chip at this time, making the chipped area level with the rest of the tile.
Step 3. Most epoxies will take 1 hour to finish drying. While the epoxy is drying, avoid touching the area or allowing any heavy traffic on the tile for at least 24 hours. You may want to cover the site to ensure the epoxy is undisturbed.
